The reddish heart wood of the Douglas fir contains resin and oils that are resistant against fungus and insect infestations. We use technically-dried Douglas fir which, depending on length, is partly weatherproofed by finger jointing. This type of wood features high surface hardness. Fissures, branches and twists reflect the natural materials used.If Douglas fir is not treated with varnish, a glossy grey-silver patina forms over time. It protects the built structure from environmental challenges, and you from time-consuming wood maintenance.Colour treatmentThe wooden parts in this kit are supplied untreated in color. Douglas fir can be used without chemical wood preservative. When used outdoors, the wood develops a natural patina over time due to weathering, which can be maintained by regular cleaning with water.If you wish to preserve the original colour and texture of the wood for as long as possible, you should treat the wooden surfaces with a suitable coating system. We recommend applying a coat of paint to all sides before assembly. Please follow the manufacturer’s instructions for application. The SKAN HOLZ increased snow-load consists of additional rafter triangles that you mount between the existing rafter triangles. In this way you reduce the rafter spacing of the carport and thereby increase the overall load capacity. Spruce and pine wood, which is not technically-dried, acquires its greenish color from metal salts released by the impregnating agent. They protect wood against fungus and insect infestations, but do not contain UV protection. Impregnation gives wood higher residual moisture. Subsequent drying can lead to release of resin, twisting and formation of drying cracks, which pose no static disadvantage and rather reflect the natural materials used.Colour treatmentThe wooden parts in this kit have been treated at the factory with a water-based preservative. This means the kit can be assembled straight away upon delivery. To ensure the long-term preservation of the wooden surface, it is recommended that the wood be treated further after a sufficient drying and weathering period of approximately 2 to 3 sunny months.Before painting, the surface should be lightly sanded and cleaned. It is then recommended to apply two coats of a wood preservative suitable for outdoor use. Products with UV protection can help to reduce the visual ageing of the wood caused by weathering. Please follow the application instructions provided by the respective manufacturer.Regular maintenance and timely re-treatment help to keep the surface in good condition over the long term. KVH is a designation for technically-dried, continuously bonded, solid spruce wood. The individual wood parts are dried, scanned for flaws, sorted and then weatherproofed by continuous bonding using finger-jointing. Fissures, branches and slight twists reflect the character of the materials used.Colour treatmentThe colour-treated components are coated with a layer of paint at the factory. The coating allows the natural wood grain to remain visible whilst ensuring a uniform surface finish. The components are coated on all sides twice at the factory, after which any excess material is brushed off.Thanks to this factory pre-treatment, the components can be assembled immediately upon delivery. A primer coat prior to assembly is not required. Each kit also includes a quantity of wood stain or paint for touching up cut edges, screw holes or any damage caused during assembly. These areas should be treated in accordance with the installation instructions.For a personalised finish, the visible wooden surfaces can be lightly sanded after assembly and treated with a suitable wood stain or paint.
